Word Lists

Pick a list based on what you need. For Wordle, the '5-letter words' lists are most useful — especially the letter+length combinations like '5-letter words starting with S'. For crosswords, jump straight to a specific pattern: 'words ending with -TION', '7-letter words starting with R'.

For Scrabble or Words with Friends, the most valuable lists are the short-word lists (2 and 3 letters) plus the high-value-letter lists ('J words', 'Z words', 'Q words'). Knowing every 2-letter word is the difference between an intermediate and an expert player — they enable parallel plays where you score two or more words in one move.

Crossword enthusiasts can chain filters. Open 'words starting with R' and length 7, then use your browser's in-page search (Ctrl+F) to find words with a specific middle letter you already know. This combines our filtering with your specific puzzle constraints faster than any cross-reference table.

Wordle players benefit most from '5-letter words starting with [letter]' lists. S, C, P, B, and T are the most common starting letters in English 5-letter words; if you're stuck after a few guesses, narrowing by starting letter often gives you 30–80 candidates rather than thousands.

Scrabble players should master the short-word lists. There are exactly 124 valid 2-letter words in TWL (the North American Scrabble dictionary) — knowing them all is fundamental. They unlock parallel plays, where you score on two intersecting words in one move. The 3-letter list is roughly 1,000 words; competitive players have these memorised.

Crossword fans benefit from combination filters. '7-letter words starting with K' has about 500 entries; combined with 1–2 known intermediate letters from the grid, you can usually find the answer by eye in 30 seconds.

English has 26 letters but very uneven letter frequencies. E, T, A, O, I, N, S, H, R are the nine most common letters; together they account for over 70% of all English letter occurrences. J, Q, X, Z are the rarest. This is reflected in Scrabble letter values: common letters score 1 point, rare letters score 8–10.

Common English suffixes (-ING, -ED, -ER, -ION, -LY, -NESS) make 'ends with' lists particularly useful. If you know a word ends with -TION, our list narrows the field dramatically — there are ~3,000 -TION words but ~250 of length 7, and only ~80 of length 6.

Common prefixes (UN-, RE-, IN-, DE-, EX-) similarly help. If a crossword clue suggests a word means 'not happy', and the word is 7 letters starting with U, the 'words starting with U, length 7' list combined with prefix knowledge points to UNHAPPY immediately.

Teachers and tutors: word lists are a natural resource for teaching phonics and spelling patterns. 'Words starting with B, length 4' is an excellent reading exercise for early primary students.
